1) What is Pilonidal disease and what causes it?

Pilonidal disease is a chronic infection of the skin in the region of the buttock crease A pilonidal sinus is a small hole or tunnel in the skin, usually at the very top of the cleft between the buttocks. Dents or pits in the skin can easily become filled with bits of skin and hair, and infected with bacteria. If the dent becomes blocked, it can get bigger, eventually forming a tunnel under the skin, filled with pus. This is known as a draining sinus or abscess


2) What are the symptoms?

Symptoms vary from a small dimple to a large painful mass.


3) How is pilonidal disease treated?

An acute abscess is managed with an incision and drained to release the pus, and reduce the inflammation and pain. A chronic sinus usually will need to be excised or surgically opened.


4) What care is required after surgery?

If the wound can be closed, it will need to be kept clean and dry until the skin is completely healed. If the wound is left open, dressings or packing will be needed to help remove secretions and to allow the wound to heal from the bottom up.


5) What advantage does laser surgery gives in treatment of pilonidal sinus?

In laser surgery of pilonidal sinus , the whole tract is curetted and then it is closed by burning with laser . it is minimal invasive procedure. Patient is quiet comfortable after surgery, with minimal wound.
